My hearing is not that great. I don’t know why. There has been no trauma to my auditory senses that I know about. I do know that in the last year or two, I frequently have to ask my kids and my husband to repeat themselves. I’m not that old. I’m only 42.
Last night, we were at my friend’s house with her kids and my kids and my husband. One of her daughters, who is in 8th grade, is doing an experiment for school and asked if we would participate. The experiment has to do with exposing the subjects to different sound frequencies and having them tell you when they can hear the noise. The kids did it and my husband did it too. They scored from 14khz to 18khz.
Then it was my turn. I was in the bedroom (also known as the experimental chamber), listening and listening. The two girls were giggling because I couldn’t hear anything. Until we were down to 8khz. Thats not good. I looked it up on the internet. One site said that that was the hearing of a 60 year-old.
So, I have an appointment with an audiologist on Thursday. And I’m not looking forward to it. I already have this image of me wearing a hearing aid. Or worse, the hearing loss being caused by a tumor. I know its extreme but that’s where I go.
